In short
In Mijas we fill in or remove swimming pools, demolish terraces and garden structures, and clear the plot afterwards. The municipality combines a hillside village at about 430 m, large coastal developments such as Calahonda and Riviera, and the dense residential area of Las Lagunas, so the method depends on which part of Mijas the house is in. The Ayuntamiento de Mijas uses its own declaración responsable form for works and can ask for a waste deposit.
Three very different Mijas: Pueblo, Costa and Las Lagunas
Mijas is one municipality, but a pool job in Mijas Pueblo has little in common with one in Calahonda or Las Lagunas. The administrative centre is a whitewashed village on a hillside at about 430 m; the coast holds the resort of La Cala de Mijas and developments such as Calahonda and Riviera; and Las Lagunas is a residential and commercial area that runs into Fuengirola.
| Part of Mijas | What we usually find | What decides the method |
|---|---|---|
| Around Mijas Pueblo and Las Lomas de Mijas | Villas on terraced slopes, pools set into the hillside | Retaining walls and machine access from above |
| Mijas Costa: La Cala, Calahonda, Riviera | Villas and townhouses on estates, private and community pools | Estate roads, community rules, neighbours close by |
| Mijas Golf and inland estates | Detached villas with larger, flatter gardens | Whether the spot will be built on later |
| Las Lagunas | Houses and chalets in a dense street grid | Where a skip or lorry can stand |
On a flatter Mijas Golf plot, a drained, compacted infill is often enough. Where a new pool, an extension or a garage is planned on the same spot, a full pool demolition is the safer choice because no buried shell is left under the new foundations.
Paperwork in Mijas: what the ayuntamiento asks for
Mijas is one of the few municipalities where we can point to something concrete: the Ayuntamiento de Mijas has an official declaración responsable for works that refers to article 293.1 of the Reglamento General of the LISTA, and works affecting the public road need prior authorisation. The town hall also requires a deposit or guarantee for construction and demolition waste, which is returned once delivery to an authorised manager is proven; the amount depends on the municipal ordinance.
That makes the delivery receipts more than a formality. Everything we take away is sorted on site and delivered to an authorised facility, and the receipts go to you or your técnico so the deposit can be recovered. The owner and their técnico file the declaración responsable; we work with that documentation and fix dates once it is in place. The guide do you need a permit to remove a pool in Spain explains the general rule in Andalusia.
Calahonda and Riviera: estate pools next to the neighbours
On the large Mijas Costa developments, houses stand close together on sloping streets, and the pool is often a few metres from the neighbour's terrace. Here the job is mostly about containment: dust is kept down with water, the coping and tiles are lifted by hand, and breaking is done with the smallest tool that does the work. If the estate has a community of owners, ask the administrator about access for lorries and permitted working hours before a date is set.
Boundary walls and old fences between plots often come down at the same time through our wall and fence removal service. A shared wall should only go with the neighbour's agreement, and a wall that holds back ground needs a técnico's view first.
Clearing the plot and keeping it clean afterwards
Mijas has an ordinance that obliges owners to keep plots clean and safe; if they do not, the town hall can order the clearing and carry it out at the owner's expense. That matters for owners who demolish a pool or an outbuilding and then leave the plot for months. After the demolition we remove the rubble and the remains of the structures and leave the ground level through our plot clearance service; for routine vegetation clearing later on, ask us first, as it is not a standard service.
You can write to us in English, send photos of the pool and the access route, and follow the job through photos at each stage. If the house itself is being demolished, our sister site covers house and villa demolition in Mijas. Frequently asked questions
Do you remove pools in La Cala de Mijas and Calahonda?
Yes. We work across Mijas Costa, including La Cala, Calahonda and Riviera, as well as Mijas Golf, Las Lagunas and the area around Mijas Pueblo.
Does Mijas ask for a waste deposit when a pool is demolished?
The Ayuntamiento de Mijas requires a deposit or guarantee for construction and demolition waste, returned once delivery to an authorised manager is proven. The amount depends on the ordinance, and we pass you the delivery receipts.
Who files the declaración responsable in Mijas?
The owner and their técnico, using the town hall's official form. We work with that documentation and plan dates around it.
Is an infill or a full removal better on Mijas Golf?
If nothing will be built on that spot, a drained and compacted infill usually works well. If a new pool or an extension is planned there, full removal is the better choice.
Can you work on a sloping plot near Mijas Pueblo?
Yes. We first check which walls retain the terraces, then decide whether a machine can reach from above or the pool must be broken by hand.
I leave the house empty for months. What happens to the plot after the pool is gone?
We leave it clear of rubble and levelled. Keeping it clean afterwards is the owner's duty under the municipal rules, so many owners arrange this with a gardener or property manager.
Is there a deposit for construction waste?
The town hall may require a deposit or guarantee for construction waste, set in its ordinance and returned once delivery to an authorised manager is proven.
How do I get a price?
Send photos, the municipality, rough dimensions and access details for a written, no-obligation quote. For a rounded band first, use the calculator on our pricing site.
Can a pool be removed in winter?
Yes, and many owners prefer it because the garden is not in use. Heavy rain can pause backfilling, since wet fill should not be compacted.
Do I need a técnico for a pool removal?
The technical documentation that the ayuntamiento asks for is prepared and signed by a técnico competente. Its scope depends on the job and the town hall.
