In short
A full pool removal breaks out the entire concrete or block shell, separates steel, tiles and plastic, and refills the excavation in compacted layers. Partial pool removal demolishes only the top and fills in the rest. The choice depends on whether anything will be built on the spot later.

Full pool removal or partial pool removal?
Full pool removal means the whole shell comes out of the ground; partial pool removal means only the upper part is demolished and the rest is filled in. Both are legitimate ways of demolishing a pool, but they leave very different ground behind.
| Full pool removal | Partial pool removal | |
|---|---|---|
| Concrete left underground | None | Lower walls and perforated floor |
| Best for | Future building, sale with a clean plot, a new pool elsewhere | Lawn, garden, planting, light paving |
| Breaking and haulage | The whole shell | Coping and upper walls |
| Backfill | Full excavation, compacted in layers | Remaining shell, compacted in layers |
The partial method is described in depth on our pool infill page. This page focuses on demolishing a pool fully, and on everything around it that usually goes at the same time.
The pool removal process on a villa plot
The pool removal process starts long before the machine arrives. We need to know how the pool was built, how a compact excavator can reach it and where the rubble can be loaded. Then the work runs in a fixed order:
- The pool is emptied and the equipment disconnected by your electrician or pool company.
- Fittings, liners, lights and pipes are removed and kept apart as plastic and metal.
- The coping, the tiled pool beach and any slab around the pool are broken out.
- The walls and floor are demolished with a hydraulic breaker; reinforcing steel is cut and separated.
- Concrete, block and ceramics are sorted into separate piles and loaded for an authorised facility.
- The excavation is backfilled in layers, each one compacted, up to the level of the surrounding ground.
A fuller walk-through with what you will see on each day is in our guide how a swimming pool is demolished, step by step.
Concrete, gunite or block: does the construction matter?
It matters a great deal, because it decides how long the breaking takes. Most pools on the Costa del Sol are reinforced concrete or sprayed concrete (gunite) with a tiled or painted finish; older ones and some self-built pools have block walls on a concrete floor. Reinforced concrete is the slowest to demolish and produces a lot of steel to cut out; block walls break faster but need care to keep blocks and concrete apart for sorting.
Prefabricated and liner pools are a different case: the panels and the liner have to come out completely, because plastic and metal cannot stay in the ground. If you have old drawings or photos of the pool being built, send them – they help us judge the thickness of the walls before we arrive. For very heavy slabs or footings beyond the pool, the industrial sister site covers slab and foundation removal.
Removing a swimming pool on a sloping or tight plot
Many villas from Estepona to Nerja are built on terraced slopes, with the pool on a platform supported by walls below it. Removing the pool there is partly a structural question: the shell may be helping to hold the platform, and the retaining walls around it must not be left without support. On those plots a técnico should assess the work first, and we follow the sequence they set. Our walls and fences service and the retaining wall guide deal with that side.
Access is the other challenge. Where there is no route for a compact machine, the pool is demolished by hand with electric breakers and the rubble is carried out, which takes considerably longer. Tell us early how the garden is reached – gate width, steps, whether there is a neighbour's plot or a road above – and we plan the method around it.
Pool removal in Spain for owners living abroad
Pool removal in Spain is something many owners organise from the United Kingdom, Scandinavia or elsewhere, and the job is set up for that. You send photos and the location; we confirm in writing which method we propose and what else will be removed; your técnico prepares the documentation; we coordinate access with whoever holds your keys. During the work you receive photos of the breaking, the sorted rubble and the backfill, and at the end the delivery receipts for the waste.
If the pool removal is part of a larger project – for example the house itself is being demolished and rebuilt – our main site covers house and villa demolition, and the post questions owners ask before removing a pool answers the practical doubts most owners raise.
Permits, community and waste
Demolishing a pool is a partial demolition of a construction. In Andalusia that is generally done by declaración responsable, unless the property is protected or in a protected setting, in which case a licencia urbanística is required. The owner files it with the ayuntamiento, normally through their técnico, and each town hall lists the documents in its own ordinance.
In a community of owners the community must be informed, and works affecting common elements need the agreement of the owners' meeting. On waste, Ley 7/2022 requires sorting into fractions, and selective demolition is mandatory since 1 January 2024: concrete (17 01 01), tiles and ceramics (17 01 03), iron and steel (17 04 05) and plastic (17 02 03) leave the site separately. The town hall may require a deposit or guarantee for construction waste, returned once delivery to an authorised manager is proven.
What decides the price of a pool demolition?
Method, construction, access, the pool beach and slabs around it, the volume of backfill and the tonnage of rubble decide the price. A full removal of a reinforced concrete pool on a plot with no machine access sits at the opposite end of the range from a partial removal on a flat plot with a driveway. We price from photos in a no-obligation written quote; for a rounded band first, see pool removal cost on our pricing site, and read red flags in pool removal quotes before comparing offers.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between pool removal and pool fill-in?
Full pool removal takes the whole shell out of the ground; a pool fill-in demolishes the top and backfills the rest. Both end with a usable surface, but only full removal leaves nothing underground.
Which method should I choose if I may sell the villa?
If a buyer might want to build on that spot, full removal keeps the plot unrestricted. If it will clearly stay garden, partial removal with good documentation is usually accepted.
Can you remove only the pool and keep the terrace?
Yes, as long as the terrace is not tied structurally to the pool. Where the pool beach and terrace are one slab, we cut a clean line and you decide what stays.
Do you remove the plant room as well?
Yes. The pump and filter room is usually demolished in the same job once the equipment has been disconnected by your electrician or pool company.
What happens to the reinforcing steel?
It is cut out during breaking, kept apart as iron and steel and delivered to an authorised facility with the rest of the sorted rubble.
Can a pool be removed without a machine?
Yes, by hand with electric breakers, carrying the rubble out. It is slower and needs more labour, so it is used only where no machine can reach the pool.
Is removing a pool on a slope risky?
It can be if the pool or the walls around it support the platform. A técnico should assess it first, and we follow the sequence they set.
Do I need a licence to demolish a pool?
In Andalusia the partial or total demolition of constructions is generally done by declaración responsable since 2024; protected properties or settings need a licence. Your técnico confirms it with the ayuntamiento.
What do I receive at the end?
Photos of the stages of the work, the finished surface and the delivery receipts for the waste taken to an authorised facility.
Can you also remove an old liner pool?
Yes. Liners, panels and metal frames always come out completely, because plastic and metal cannot be left in the ground.
Is the rubble from the pool recycled?
It is sorted on site into fractions and delivered to an authorised facility, which decides the treatment. Clean concrete is a mineral fraction suitable for recovery.
